Taichung MRT Guide: The Green Line, HSR Connections & Last-Mile Reality
How to use Taichung's 18-station Green Line without expecting it to reach everything: HSR and railway connections, useful stops, fares, payment, tourist sights needing buses or taxis, and family travel tips.
Taichung's metro requires a different mental model from Taipei's. It is not yet a web covering every tourist district. It is one Green Line: an elevated arc from Beitun through the Wenxin Road corridor to the high-speed rail station. Used for the journeys it actually serves, it is clean, scenic, and extremely useful. Used as if it reaches every famous attraction, it produces long walks and confused taxi rides.
The key is to combine it with buses, Taiwan Railway, YouBike, or a short taxi rather than expecting the metro to do the entire trip.
The Green Line in One Sentence
Taichung Metro's operating Green Line is 16.71 kilometers with 18 stations, running between Beitun Main Station and HSR Taichung Station. Most of it is elevated, so the ride also works as a moving introduction to Taichung's wide roads, apartment districts, parks, and changing skyline.
Proposed and under-construction lines appear in long-term plans, but a future line on a planning map is not a train you can board. For the current trip, use the official Green Line map.
The Three "Taichung Stations" Problem
Travelers regularly mix up:
- HSR Taichung Station - the high-speed rail stop southwest of the city center.
- Xinwuri Station - the adjacent Taiwan Railway station.
- Taichung Station - the main Taiwan Railway station in the historic central district.
The Green Line terminates at HSR Taichung Station, with covered connections to high-speed rail and nearby Xinwuri railway station. It does not run to the historic Taichung railway station downtown. From HSR, use Taiwan Railway to Taichung Station, take a bus or taxi, or ride the metro to a Green Line stop closer to your destination.
Stations Visitors Are Most Likely to Use
| Station | Best use | Connection note |
|---|---|---|
| HSR Taichung Station | Arrival from Taipei, Tainan, or Kaohsiung | Connects to HSR and Xinwuri railway station. |
| Daqing | Transfer to Taiwan Railway | Useful for trips along the conventional rail corridor. |
| Feng-le Park | Park, surrounding retail, and southern city access | Check walking distance to the exact destination. |
| Wenxin Forest Park | Park and Fulfillment Amphitheater events | Event exits can become crowded. |
| Taichung City Hall | New municipal center and nearby commercial districts | Some hotels and department stores still require a walk or bus. |
| Wenxin Chongde | Northern restaurants and residential districts | A useful taxi handoff point. |
| Songzhu | Transfer to Taiwan Railway | Connect for northern and central rail stops. |
What the MRT Does Not Reach Directly
Fengjia Night Market, the National Taichung Theater, Calligraphy Greenway, the National Museum of Natural Science, Miyahara, and the historic central station area are not all sitting neatly on metro exits. A station may still be a useful starting point, but check the final distance. Taichung blocks are large, and a map's "nearby" can mean a hot twenty-minute walk.
For Gaomei Wetlands, Rainbow Village, Dakeng trails, or destinations outside the Green Line corridor, plan a bus, taxi, tour, or other connection from the beginning.
Tickets and Payment
Single journeys are distance-based: when fare-charging service began in April 2021, Taichung MRT set the fare at NT$20 for the first 5 km, rising in steps to a maximum of NT$50. Ticket machines and passenger service offices sell single-journey tickets. EasyCard, iPASS, and icash stored-value cards are accepted and can be topped up in the station.
For a short visit, stored value is usually simpler than a monthly regional pass. If you will use buses and trains intensively for many days, compare the current TPASS rules, eligibility, and included modes before purchase.
A Practical First Ride from HSR
- After leaving the HSR platform, follow signs for Taichung MRT rather than Taiwan Railway unless rail is your intended transfer.
- Buy or top up one card per passenger.
- Check the destination's nearest Green Line station and final walking distance.
- Board toward Beitun Main Station.
- At the chosen stop, use the correct exit and switch to bus, taxi, YouBike, or walking for the last segment.
If the hotel is beside Taichung railway station, Taiwan Railway from Xinwuri may be more direct than taking the Green Line around the city and transferring again.
Families, Luggage, and Accessibility
All 18 stations are modern, with elevators and accessible routes. Use the wide gate for a stroller or large suitcase, keep children behind the platform safety line, and avoid blocking the elevator lobby while reorganizing bags. The elevated platforms can be windy and exposed to summer heat, so keep water for after you leave the paid area.
Like Taiwan's other metro systems, eating and drinking are restricted in the paid area. Keep food sealed and finish drinks before entry. Service schedules change for events, maintenance, and typhoons; check the official site on the day.
The Right Way to Think About Taichung Transit
Taipei rewards staying on the metro. Taichung rewards choosing the best tool for each leg. The Green Line is a dependable spine; buses and rail are the ribs; taxis and bikes finish the last kilometer. Once that becomes the plan, the system stops feeling incomplete and starts feeling efficient.
The best first use is simple: arrive by high-speed rail, ride the Green Line above the city, and use one well-chosen station as the launch point for the neighborhood you actually want to explore.
Passing Through Taichung on a Health-Screening Trip?
If Taichung is one leg of a longer Taiwan trip, a free morning in Taipei can hold a preventive check-up: Convenient, our 1.5-hour holistic exam at iHope Clinic in Taipei, is $299, with an English report. See the screening packages to fit one around the rest of the itinerary.
