Kaohsiung gives visitors a transit map that matches the city's shape. One metro line runs north-south from the airport through downtown to the high-speed rail connection and beyond. Another crosses east-west through the cultural districts. Around the waterfront, a circular light rail glides past piers, parks, museums, markets, and neighborhoods that once faced industrial tracks.

The result is not a huge network, but it is exceptionally legible. Learn one red line, one orange line, and one light-rail loop, and most first-time itineraries become easy.

The Red Line: Airport, Downtown, and HSR

The Red Line is the visitor's backbone. Kaohsiung International Airport (R4) has its own station. Northbound trains reach Sanduo Shopping District, Central Park, Formosa Boulevard, Kaohsiung Main Station, and Zuoying (R16), the transfer for Taiwan High Speed Rail.

This direct airport-to-city connection is one of Kaohsiung's great travel advantages. You do not need an airport express ticket; use the regular metro system. Check the final train before a late arrival and leave enough time for airline check-in on departure day.

The Orange Line: Old Port and Culture

The Orange Line runs from Hamasen through Yanchengpu and Formosa Boulevard toward the east. Visitors use it for:

    • Hamasen (O1) - old port district and light-rail connections.
    • Yanchengpu (O2) - Pier-2 Art Center access, local food, and waterfront walks.
    • Formosa Boulevard (O5/R10) - the only transfer between red and orange, famous for the Dome of Light.
    • Weiwuying (O10) - National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts.
    • Dadong (O13) - arts facilities and Fongshan exploration.

Station numbering skips O3 because of network planning history; you have not missed a stop.

    The Circular Light Rail

Kaohsiung Light Rail has operated as a complete 38-station loop since the full circle began service on New Year's Day 2024. It serves places the two heavy-rail lines approach less directly: Dream Mall, the exhibition center, Cruise Terminal, Glory Pier, Love Pier, Pier-2, Hamasen, Shoushan, the Museum of Fine Arts, and Science and Technology Museum corridor.

The vehicles run at street level, so they are slower than the MRT and more affected by intersections. That is part of their usefulness: the light rail is transport and a low-speed city tour.

Tap when entering and tap when leaving. Platforms may feel open compared with gated metro stations, but the ride is not free. Since 26 February 2024, fares have been distance-based: NT$20 for the first 5 km, rising in NT$5 steps to a maximum of NT$35 per trip, with a discount for EasyCard, iPASS and QR-code riders. Inspectors can check proof of payment.

    How to Pay

EasyCard and iPASS are the easiest choices across metro and light rail. Single-journey tickets are available for the metro. Kaohsiung also sells one- and two-day QR travel passes, including versions covering both KMRT and KLRT; compare the pass price with the trips you will actually make.

One card is for one passenger. Always use the same card or payment credential to enter and exit. If a light-rail reader fails, use another reader or ask staff rather than repeatedly tapping and hoping the transaction registered.

    Three Easy Kaohsiung Itineraries

    • Waterfront day: Orange Line to Yanchengpu, explore Pier-2, then use light rail around Love Pier, Glory Pier, and the harbor.
    • Arrival day: Red Line from the airport to Central Park or Formosa Boulevard, leave luggage, then continue by orange line for an evening in Yancheng.
    • North-to-south transfer: HSR to Zuoying, Red Line into downtown, then continue to the airport on the same line when the trip ends.

For Cijin, take the metro or light rail toward Hamasen and continue to the ferry at Gushan. The ferry is a separate fare and part of the experience.

    Heat Changes the Last Kilometer

Kaohsiung sidewalks and waterfronts are enjoyable, but summer heat and sudden rain make distances feel longer. Choose the station exit closest to the destination, use YouBike for short flat trips if you are comfortable in traffic, and take a taxi when luggage, children, or midday heat make a nominal fifteen-minute walk unreasonable.

Keep water with you but do not drink in the metro paid area. Eating, drinking, smoking, and chewing gum are prohibited there. Light-rail platform rules and onboard etiquette still apply even though the stations are open to the street.

    Accessibility and Events

Metro stations have elevators and accessible gates; light-rail vehicles offer low-floor boarding. At large concerts, exhibitions, and holiday waterfront events, platforms can become crowded and services may be adjusted. Use the operator's live information, allow an extra train, and do not wait until the last possible departure.

Typhoon-day schedules can change substantially. If local government suspends work and classes, check official announcements before leaving the hotel.

Why Kaohsiung Is So Easy to Learn

Taipei's system is powerful because it offers many choices. Kaohsiung's is powerful because the choices are obvious. Red connects airport, center, rail, and HSR. Orange reaches the old port and arts venues. Light rail traces the waterfront and closes the circle.

By the second day, visitors stop consulting the entire map. They ask one question: red, orange, or the loop? In a broad subtropical city, that simplicity gives more time to look out the window.
